Should it be theoretically possible to recieve an MPEG4 stream from a Quicktime Streaming server?

the url and format for such a streams as i use it is for instance:
rtsp://qt.server.org/stream.sdp

were the server streams over port 80, and in the Quicktime Player one configures the Transport Setup to use http and port 80.

i tested this, and entered the rtsp.. url in VLC, and it was recieving the stream (i could see network traffic), it showed the information about audio and video tracks and formats, but it didn't show image or played sound.

an example of this using a streamed .mp4 file (instead of a live .sdp stream) you can find here: rtsp://qt.waag.org/baloons.mp4

am i doing something wrong? Should i configure something different?

would be very cool if all platforms could recieve these streams using VLC

thanks

This link plays now on my developer version of VLC.
Several issues with QT streaming server were fixed since november. This specific issue was fixed in januari. A new version of VLC will be able to view these clips.
