VLC Automatically Compressing HD Video Conversion

Hey all!

I'm trying to convert a HD .mkv to a .mp4 to play on my Playstation 3.

The .mkv is just over 3 gigs, but the converted .mp4 is just under 1 gig. I tried playing the video back and the picture and sound quality are significantly degraded.

Can anyone help me to convert the .mkv to a .mp4 without any compression or loss of quality? Thanks in advance...

Don't transcode (that is, only remux) if you don't want to loose quality. Otherwise, it's unavoidable.

when you say "remux" do you mean 'remix'?

No, recreate the container.

Ugh, I'm not sure why I'm having so much difficulty with this, I'm typically not so technologically-retarded. Just tried converting a 8 gig .mkv to a .mp4. The .mp4 ended up being 3 gigs with noticeable quality degradation.

Can anyone walk me though the conversion of a .mkv to .mp4, preserving audio and video quality?
