VLC 1.1.5, A S S subtitles causing it to freeze and lock up.

I downloaded a set of *.A S S subtitles here:

I don't know why but every single time I open the . a s s file VLC just locks up and stops responding. I've tried Google but none of the search results returned users with the same version as I do. I don't know if it's got something to do with the filetype or what. Any suggestions?
