VLC Wont Play Video's

Hello to all 
as a Newbie, I have 2 Video in AVI that I tried to play in VLC but they don't work! No sound, No picture' Nothing So I have converted them to Mpeg and they wont play in that mode either! Can someone please tell me what I am doing Wrong here? Am I missing Codacs as Windows Media Player (11) wont Play them either. I have no experience with this or VLC so please bear with me
