Taking Snapshots via HTTP interface

I'm trying to setup VLC to stream a video via UDP, controlled by the HTTP interface. That much works fine, but I'd also like to be able to use the snapshot feature (to save snapshots on the same system that is streaming the video). The HTTP interface has a button for this, but I haven't been able to get it to work unless I am also displaying the video locally. Is there any way to take snapshots via the HTTP interface without displaying the video locally?

If it matters, I'm doing my testing on Mac OS X, but it also needs to work on Ubuntu.
