Problems with watching / ripping DVD - How to debug?

I'm trying to rip a DVD for use on a Netbook. I'm running 1.15 under Windows XP. Initially I'd been trying to rip the main feature, so Media -> Convert / Save then choosing the disc, the title and the chapter. After clicking Convert / Save I kept the default "H.264 + AAC (MP4)" profile and set the Destination File as a .mp4 file. I kept Display the output un-ticked and then click start. All seems well with it progressing at faster than real-time but after about five minutes into the feature it silently fails and returns to the default VLC window as if I'd just opened it. I've since realised that if I simply try to watch the feature it fails at about the same point without any message.

How can I work out what is going on? I assume there's a log file somewhere? Can anyone think what the problem might be? I've watched the DVD on a standalone player without issue.

Many thanks,
Geoff

Reading elsewhere on the forum I've realised what I have to do to get debugging information. The following is what is output when VLC stops while watching the DVD:
