Can't run more than one instance of VLC

Hi-
I love VLC like I love Fresca, but ever since I downloaded an update last year, I've been unable to run more than one instance of VLC at a time.
I made sure I unchecked the "Allow only one instance" option.
This happens on both my systems, one a desktop running Vista 64 and the other a netbook running Windows 7. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've read the FAQs and the forums and it doesn't seem like anybody else is having this problem, so I get the feeling I'm missing something obvious.
I'm running version 1.1.4.
Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
