vlc causes pc to reboot

i am able to open vlc, but whenever i open a file, the computer reboots without shuting down windows
anyone knows why?

Probably a driver issue.
Upgrade your videocard/audiocard drivers to the latest version and make sure your DirectX installation is up to date as well.

I have the lastest video drivers for my ATI 9600 Pro. I have the lastest Dx9. (I am a gamer. I just refuse to allow IE or and microslop media players on my systems.) I have removed Internet Xploiter and am running Win 98 SE. The program opens but when I ask it to run any file, it freezes up my system. I have to control alt delete which leads to a direct reboot. 100% of the time.

Just an idea, you can try to check out the CPU usage of your computer, if the VLC consumes too much resource, probably that is the reason.
