General Question regarding VLC Player

To all I'm new to the site and had a question regarding the VLC media player. I've been asked to build a DVD with scouting footage to send to colleges for a friend, but I'm having a problem finding a media player that will work all the time on just about any Windows platform PC. I've built the DVD to autoplay with using Windows MediaPlayer and it typically works unless a codec is needed. If a codec is needed, I've included an install of DivX on the disc.

But now my question is does anyone know if VLC or any mediaplayer will run as a standalone player from the disc itself and not be dependent on what's loaded on the PC?
