availability of audio and video stream

Hi all.
VLC gets stream. Who knows whether it is possible by means of VLC to know whether there is a stream of audio and video. There is a possibility that is only audio, but no pictures, and now would like to know without viewing the video, which is not so with the steam.

With another application or just using the normal vlc? What OS?

Yes, with the help VLC. One process vlc broadcasts, another process gets vlc stim.
