Not playing subs - "no suitable demux module for"

Hi,
i've been using vlc quite a while now, always happy with it exept this time.
While trying to watch an .avi with .srt subtitles following error occurs:
main error: no suitable demux module for `file/subtitle://C:\[subtitle path]
I've tried:
resetting prefenreces and cache
disabling automatic sub recognition
deinstall and new installation
when I open the srt with an editor everything seems normal
and the playing the .avi is no problem, just no subs
