Black stripes problem / skipping of DVD's intro contents

Hey!

I love VLC, but I've noticed two irritating issues about the way it plays videos (on Win7 64, but it's not related to OS).

1)
These are two screens of the same frame of "The 13th Warrior", both fullscreen:
Windows Media Player: http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/5726/13wmp.jpg
VLC: http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7097/13vlc.jpg

The difference is: VLC playback gives two colors of black stripes, which is painfull to watch.
It looks like VLC plays all movies with high gamma settings? WMP gives two solid black stripes and vivid colors while VLC gives four stripes and washed out colors :S Is there any way to force VLC to automatically play movies in correct gamma/contrast settings (with two seamless black stripes)?

2)
Why VLC skipps intro contents of DVD (like antipiracy ads / main menu language settings screen) and starts playback form main menu?
Is it possible for VLC to start DVDs form the beginning, like any normal player?

During topic approval time I found remedies for both issues:
1) WMP has it's own Brightness and Contrast settings. For VLC I adjusted these settings in Nvidia control panel.
2) I've found a setting called "Start directly in menu" in [Show settings > All > Input Codecs > DVD with menu] section of VLC preferences. Unchecking it made VLC play all contents of my DVDs.

Sorry for posting unnecessary topic. I didn't know that VLC has so detailed preferences.
