SSH to new VLC Media Player for IPhone

Postby adam_fozz » 29 Oct 2010 16:23

Hi there,

New member, so hope there hasnt been a post about this.

I have been searching through my iphone to find the VLC player folders to allow me to SSH files to it rather than using crappy Itunes. Has anyone else worked out how to do this, or even if its possible?

This would be a really nice product if you could cut out itunes.

Thanks in advance

That would be a cool addition, but so far, you cannot.

Patches are welcome.

the *magic* folder is easy enough to find...
  • copy a file to VLC using the iTunes method
open terminal OR ssh to iphone
    find ~/Applications/ -name "*avi"

    Code: Select all

    /var/mobile/Applications/5CAC1DB2-EBDA-4D90-8C22-080DFDCE9DC1/Documents/Tom.And.Jerry.Collection.avi
  • ALTERNATIVELY: SB Settings > more > app folders > VLC

    Code: Select all

    POP-UP reads "/var/mobile/Applications/5CAC1DB2-EBDA-4D90-8C22-080DFDCE9DC1/"
further suggestions...
  • make a sim-link so its easier to find

    Code: Select all

    ln -s ~/Applications/5CAC1DB2-EBDA-4D90-8C22-080DFDCE9DC1/Documents ~/Media/VLC
  • get ezShare (app store link - $$$)
... connect to 2 file servers (SSH @ home & localhost ) ... copy avi's to the phone from any where
beyond a nice/clean file browser, it also has a good VNC/RDP client.
and many additional features like smb-server / back-up the camera roll to a server
that last one is not required, you can copy them from your desktop, i do sometimes.
i also like having a way to get videos onto the phone when im not home

zosky is right, but he's a little confusing about where to go.

Just point cyberduck to /User/Applications/

in there you will see (obv) your user applications, but they will be named strangley like this: 5CAC1DB2-EBDA-4D90-8C22-080DFDCE9DC1

if you just installed VLC (like i did) you can find it quickly by sorting by date modified. You will know you found the folder as it will have a vlc.app in it. Go to the documents folder and ssh your videos in there. VLC will automatically detect them and play them.

Enjoy adding movies wirelessly at 802.11n (router permitting) speeds!
