Format conversion procedure

Converting video. I'm not as advanced as you seem to be.
First, when it asks where to save the output it shows a dropdown list of possible formats. It shows " Containers (*.ps *.ts *.mpg *.ogg *.asf *.mp4 *.mov * ". That's exactly what it shows me.
I'm supposed to choose one of those and type it in?
It does not show avi for example. You mean VLC can't deal with avi?
This is quite confusing and unclear to a regular user.

How to extract aac audio from flv or mpeg4 video without transcoding. Sometimes it worked for me, mostly not, it's unpredictable. One time output went to higher level folder than I said, usually no output. I've tried target formats like audio aac and video mp4 without video.

The AVI muxer of VLC is somehow broken for now so you'd better don't use it anyway.

VLC is having troubles to deal with some FLV files. This is a known issue awaiting for a fix.
You may want to try AviDemux which is an open source dedicated program for video editing and conversion and it can also do audio extraction.

I just tried avidemux. No instructions. I tried what I thought was saving aac audio from a mpeg4 flv file. The result is unplayable.
Is there something I should know about doing it with VLC? I tried profiles like mp4 audio or video without the video. Extensions like aac, mp4, m4a.
And I don't know what those formats are like asf when it comes to divx. It isn't avi.
In editing profile we can choose all kinds of things including avi, but you don't give an avi profile. Doesn't make sense.
