how to properly save & open movie clips from internet

I'm new to this problem, so pardon if it's already been addressed elsewhere.
I'm on a Mac, OS 10.3. In the past when I downloaded any movie clips off Intenet sites, a QuickTime window automatically opened, and there was the movie, ready to play.
I'm now trying to download movie clips from a European site that says its movie clips are in "avi" format. When I click on the link for, say, a 15 MB movie clip, downloading kicks in, as seen on the bottom bar of my browser. After a couple minutes, downloading reaches completion, but then a window pops up saying, QuickTime can not open the movie because a "data reference is missing", and even though the passage of time showed that something was definitely downloading onto my computer, I can not find the file anywhere on my hard disk, so that I can try to open it with a different player like VLC. Where did the 15 MB clip go? What QuickTime data reference is missing?
I also tried opening VLC, pulling down the File menu to open file, clicking Network and http, then typing in the link to that clip, but I get error messages about 401 Authorization required and "no suitable access module". Any help here would be appreciated, thanks

Instead of clicking on the link to the avi, use ctrl-click and select Save to disk.
The movie will now be downloaded and you can probably view it with VLC.

QuickTime cannot view all video formats by default. among them many types of .avi's
