streaming audio in --> out to file as MP3

I listen to a lot of internet radio. Every once in a while it's nice to make a quick recording of something special.

I have VLC 0.7.0 installed on a Windows ME system (4.90.3000). VLC 0.7.0 will play radio stations streaming via mms with the wma2 codec. Furthermore, it can also export these streams to my hard disc as a standard MP3 file. This works very nicely.

VLC 0.7.0 will also play radio stations streaming via http with mp3. However if I try to export these streams to hard disc VLC falls over and spits out an error message blaming all on "MSVCRT.DLL".

WMA in, MP3 out works OK. MP3 in, MP3 out crashes. No doubt I am a dumb Windows user who is missing something obvious. What might is be?

Did you try the dumpstream (demuxdump) option?

Yes, I did. If I have mms/wma2 input the dump option works correctly. If I have http/mp3 input the dump option does not generate a file (i.e. nothing is dumped, although the stream plays correctly).
