VLC for iPad | Optimal file types

Hi,
Great to have the VLC port on iPad!
I've tried a number of HD videos now, each of which throw up the "Your iPad is probably too slow to play this movie correctly" and indeed the iPad struggles - the videos are unwatchable.
So I'm wondering what it the best video format/codec to convert to for smooth playback of HD video on the iPad? I'm guessing sound settings also have an impact on processor usage, so would be helpful to have full optimal settings.
