In-Movie Translations Not Showing

Greetings. I'm not sure what to call those in-movie translations displayed as text in movies, that are native to dialogue between characters, but I can not see them when I play DVDs. I know they are suppose to be in the movies but I'm not sure if there is an option to turn this 'feature' on/off, or what that text is called. Any help would be appreciated.
