Is the vlc playlist ever going to work again?

Prior to version 1 I was able to dump around 5000 videos in the playlist and watch them on random. Now, it force closes after the first video. Will this ever be fixed or am I doomed to use an old version forever.
Windows 7 with many gigs of ram.

5000 videos in the playlist + random + next = crash
