Error playing .dat format files

Hi im new to linux. I've been using windows for a long time and i thought i will start using linux as it will be more usefull for programming. Im using Ubuntu 10.04.
I've installed the latest vlc player.
It plays most of the file formats. But i have problem playing playing files with .dat format which usually come with video disks.
It displays this kind of error message
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file.

Can anyone help me solve this issue.
I dont have any such problems in Windows at all. It plays perfectly.
