transport stream playback broken by VLC v1.1.1 ?

Postby nvingo » 26 Jul 2010 22:00

I just started VLC 1.1.0 to play a .rec file from a Topfield PVR, which it was doing correctly.
I then had the upgrade VLC box displayed and went through the process.
Now VLC 1.1.1 won't play any .ts (Humax PVR) data.(no extension) (Technotrend PVR) or .rec files including files previously successfully played.
My symptom is simply that the filename is displayed in the usual area VLC window footer, briefly then disappears. Play button does not change to pause as usual nor a video area open up.
This is the same whether the file is dropped onto VLC or media>open_file.

It will play (tested so far) streamed radio, .AVI and .mpg (curiously the latter generated from a .ts previously).
I note from the forums here that recently .m2ts (another transport steam container ?) is also reported to fail playback.

Can you try: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 0727-0202/ to see if it fixes it?

Thankyou for that.

I can confirm 1.1.2-git 20100727_0213 WILL playback (all) those transport stream files that failed on 1.1.1, and of course .AVI .MPG and dshow streaming that I also use it for that always worked.
That can be considered fixed.

I note that radio streaming displays the tag differently. I wouldn't have looked for that were it not mentioned in respect to video file tags by another 1.1.1 user. It is of no consequence to me.

Thanks again for fixing the .ts. Advise please, should I now revert to 1.1.0 pending official release of 1.1.2 or continue to use this one ?

Continue with this one, it is pretty safe. 1.1.2 will follow in a matter of days.

I also came here to report that the *.TS files (H264 part 10+AAC) recorded on a Sigmatek DVBR-520 HD TDT receiver were not working for video but I now verified that it plays fine on VLC Portable 1.1.2 Rev2. Thanks for that because VLC 1.1.2 is the only player where I can see video and hear sound at the same time. I had tried latest BSPlayer and Nero Showtime 9 and they only showed me the video.

I too encountered this problem when trying to play .rec files. The problem is, however, that none of the VLC versions I've tried, including the one linked above, do seem to play them. The player itself behaves as the first poster said. No video or audio, only the filename shows for a while and then dissappears. Some help would be appreciated.

.rec files are non-standard .ts files. You cannot expect VLC to play them.

My .rec files are from a Topfield CRC-2400 hd receiver and since the first poster got his Topfield .rec's working again I thought I would as well. It's strange that some .rec's work and some don't.
Unfortunately I don't have any .ts files at hand to test if they work. They have worked before, however.

.rec files aren't much non-standard, they are simply mpeg2 (in the case of the Topfield pvr5800t) data with extra programme/channel data at the start. Simple for a media player to skip over.
.ts files are just the mpeg2 data, transport stream for broadcast.
I and others have been using VLC to playback both types for a while, and I've just checked the latest 1.1.3 which still works.
