converting different videos with VLC for iPod nano

is it possible to convert video files with VLC 1.1.1 into videos which iPod nano can play?
I have tried several times to convert to .mp4, but the output videos are not accepted by iTunes for iPod....

and this conversion guide does not work for VLC 1.1.1 - or I do not understand how......

Maybe anyone has a protocol how to do this, I would be very greatful

I suppose you want to encode to H.264 using x264 encoder. By default x264 uses High profile with CABAC and B-frames but iPod only accepts Baseline profile with no CABAC and no B-frames.
