changes to default conversion behavior in 1.1.0

I'm having a problem in 1.1.0 with a conversion. No problem in the previous version. What I've been doing is crude and horrible but was working in previous version. I'm a complete nuub. If there is a better way....
Menu -> Media -> Convert/Save
Disk -> Starting Position
- Title [0]
- Chapter [0]
- Display the output [yes]
{Convert/Save}
Destination: [desktop]\file.mpg
Profile: [Video H264 + AAC (MP4)]
- i make no changes to the default encoding settings
{Start}
The output is displayed and I click 'play' on the dvd based menu on screen. I wait until the dvd has finished playing and returned to the dvd menu then I click the stop button on VLC.
Sidebar: Ideally I would open at the file level but the reason I'm opening at the disk level is because when I open at the file level the screen output is very pixelated. I do not understand why but figured I would avoid it. I got this in the previous version so I'm interested to know but not too concerned about that part.
EDIT - Great I forgot to add the actual problem:
In 1.1.0 the file I create seems to be about the right size but there is no video or audio content there when I try to play it in VLC.
Thanks for any suggestions or a jump in the right direction. ; )
