VLC not playing files from hard drive :(

Hi guys,
I'm a total newbie here, just wondering if anyone could help me.
VLC is not playing files from my hard drive although for some weird reason, it does play disks- dvd's.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but to no fruition.
Anyone got ideas? This is getting to be really frustrating. Grrrr...
