Filename NOT showing at start of playback

Yeah, this is kind of a small issue, and from the fact that I haven't found another post about this, I gather it's not something anyone but me has a problem with. However, for me, it's something that annoys me to death since it's a change made in the new version of VLC.
The thing is that instead of showing the filename when a new item in my playlist is played, it shows the name that's in the tag. VLC tries to decipher the filename and use that information to fill in the tag. Doing this makes a vid that's called "This Is Just an Example - S01E01 - The First Show Ever" show as "This Is Just an Example - Season 01 Episode 01"... which leaves out the actual name of the episode. Is there a way to change the settings for it to use the filename instead, or a way to change it so that it adds the name of the episode aswell?
I hope I do make any sense so you know what I'm talking about, I may have failed at this though, so if you don't get what I mean, do ask and I'll try to explain further. Thx!
*EDIT* After looking around some more I find myself questioning my previous statement that VLC deciphers the filename to fill in the tag, it may just be that my vids have had a tag all along but it hasn't shown it before. In that case getting both the playlist and the text that show up at the start of a new vid to display the filename instead of the tag would be awesome. *EDIT*

Can you look at it with mediainfo ?

Yeah, the info that shows up in there is always in the title section, and I can change the info there, but changing it for all the shows I have on my computer would take forever.

Ok, so VLC displays one of the tags but this tag doesn't suit you ?

I'd rather it would show the file name like it did before the new version came out, instead of showing the tag.

Can you share a file with me?

Sure I could, but I don't see the point, this is not a file-specific issue, it's more of a settings issue.

No, it is based on the tags in the file.

Yeah, but I want VLC to ignore the tags and use the filename instead, like it used to be before the latest patch. I mean, I can go through every video I have on my computer and remove the tag (if the tags are blank it shows the file name instead), but that would take forever. What I'm wondering is if there is any setting that makes VLC ignore the tag and use the filename instead. If you have a video file from my computer or if you test it with a video file on your computer doesn't really matter. The files themselves aren't important, my files aren't different from any other files. So yeah, it's the tags in the files that makes VLC show that info instead of the file name, but that should be the same with any files. It's the way VLC handles the tags that is the issue, and the question is wether I can make VLC ignore the tags and go directly for the file name (any files, mine, yours, anybodys, no matter if the tags are filled in or not) without having to go over my whole archive, file by file, and remove the tags.
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to talk back, I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me, I just think I've failed at explaining what the problem is.

I second that!
Tag dispay only makes sense for mp3 files, NOT for video files!
At least make it configurable!

no, no, no. WMV have tags for a reason.
Still, if you don't share a file, I won't be able to look at the issue.

But it displays the tags for .AVI files aswell, and like I said, I could share a file, how should we go about it?

But who cares about WMV? It's a shitty proprietary format (thanks MS) no one really needs.

On a very related topic, I would like to be able to see the file name in a VLC playlist either alongside or instead of the "title" -- unless somebody knows of something that will re-title all kinds of video files en masse!
Is there some way I can view the file name rather than an episode number or a track number in the playlist?

That's exactly what I want to, the name that shows on-screen at the start of playback of a file is the same that is used in the playlist, so fixing either issue would fix the other... I'm guessing...

Hi guys
Im a longtime user of vlc but new to this forum. I also second this thread . I wish i could configure vlc how to present the file in playlist and when playing file for example turn off meta data tags and just use the filename or the opposite , in my case its annoying to watch tvseries in avi where half of the episodes are tagged and the other half not.

No, it is based on the tags in the file.
While this is true, any video file which had a tag as he's describing would show the same types of things. I'd be willing to share a file if that's what it took.
I'm also seeing VLC arbitrarily shorten file names - Lost.S06E16.HDTV.XviD-NoTV becomes Lost S06E16 (and has no title data that I can find). This is pretty annoying - and going through and editing tags isn't viable. Aside from the fact that I have an enormous amount of video, when VLC gives things names that aren't their file names when no title data exists, this further complicates and annoys. Further, I've edited some title data and VLC ignores it and still entitles the items by their former titles.

I am (and have been) experiencing the same problems.
VLC's internal tag-editing capabilities are spotty at best. I re-tagged a great many files manually using "Media Information" from the "Tools" menu only to find that many of the tags were in no way saved, and when the playlist was reopened the tags were gone.
Further, having found (working) tag editors for two file types (specifically, AVI and MKV files), VLC doesn't always accept modified tags.
But, why are video tags being forced down VLC users' throats when there is no apparent standard, no one program to edit them and, it appears, no way to edit some of them using any readily available, user-friendly application? Let us have a filename view option.

Here's one I uploaded. I've gone in and edited the title a couple times and it still shows as "Custom Video" in VLC (both when it launches and at the top/bottom of the window). I'd much rather it go by filename rather than an inconsistent tagging scheme.

It may or may not please you to know: I found a freeware program that successfully edited the tag information of this AVI... I've been using it to re-tag my AVIs one file at a time. It is successful in the overwhelming majority of cases. It's freeware, like I said, so I hope I'm not breaking forum rules by recommending it. It's called abcAVI Tag Editor and I downloaded it from Free-Codecs.com at the following address:

Indeed, this batman movie has a INAM set, which is the title, and therefore the behaviour is normal...
Maybe, we could find a workaround.

That'd be cool, like I said, editing a ton of tags is doable but super inconvenient. Thanks!
