VLC 1.1.0 wont play DVD "properly" from HDD

VLC 1.1.0 wont play DVD "properly" from HDD. What I mean is that if I dbl click the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder from a DVD folder that is located on my HARD DRIVE the DVD will not play. I can play the individual vob files from my HDD fine. This issue only occurs with files located on my HDD played with v1.1.0...vlc v1.0.5 had no such issues. And playback of files from my DVD drive works fine. Again here is the equation:
vlc v1.1.0 + VIDEO_TS.IFO + HDD = failure
vlc v1.1.0 + .vob file + HDD = success
vlc v1.1.0 + any file + DVD drive = success
vlc v1.0.5 + any file + any drive = success
............thanx

Can you try to open directly the VIDEO_TS folder with Open Folder?

I am not from the Videolan team, but can you share the IFO? Even if it comes from a commercial movie, it's not techincally piracy, because I doubt that sharing IFO data can be considered "copyright infrigment". Plus, you can take fragments of a copyrighted work for demonstration and education purposes.
The guys at DVD Fab always ask for the IFO everytime a menu problem occurs (yes, it''s dvd decrypting software, but is still bound to the law).

doesnt matter what movie the IFO came from...and I never heard of DVD Fab!?
....any real help with this problem would be great! If not I will go back to v1.0.5 since I dont have a Blu-ray player anyways...i really dont need any of v1.1.0 "improvements" lol

OK, I don't have the issue.
Can you check if that happens with open file from the VLC menu ?

Does this happen with all DVD movies, or only with a specific one?
If it happens with a specific DVD, please share title + region. If someone from devel comes across the same movie, then it would be easier to find the problem.

I would be happy to do so but I cant find any logs...where would they be...what file name? Also I have downloaded vlc 110 r2 portable from here:
http://portableapps.com/news/2010-07-04 ... .1.0_rev_2. Now I get this error where before vlc would open but not play.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://C:\#1Working\name of movie\VIDEO_TS\'. Check the log for details.
i substituted the movie name with "name of movie" because it happens with any movie...and again I can find no log file!?!
Again I will state the facts...
1. this never happened with any previous version of vlc ive had
2. it only happens from HDD
3. can play vobs but not VIDEO_TS.IFO
4. doesnt matter what the movie is or what program used to rip to disc

Just googled "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://C:\#1Working\name of movie\VIDEO_TS\'. Check the log for details." with not a single result...hmm...guess if I want to watch a DVD "properly" after being ripped to my hard drive I will use WMP or PowerDVD. VLC is still way better for everything else I watch on the computer, its a keeper. Im done with this minor annoyance...on to bigger problems, like cleaning up my 13 yr old kids computer!

Rename #1Working to working. Does it work ?
OK this is wierd!?! I renamed my dir to 1working and the problem is solved. I dont understand it but it works now. Also when i tried to rename my directory it wouldnt let me...kept telling me that access was denied, check if disc is full etc. I had to move my DVD files to another dir, rename #1working to 1working and then move my dvd files back...wierd stuff here! Anyways it works now...i guess the # in the dir name was the fly in the ointment. Thanx

Hi,
The problem is more complex. If in the path of the ripped DVD is any nonstandard or international character, the Error message will appear. I moved my DVD from "Veřejné" (which is Czech equivalent to "Public") folder to another with standard ascii character set (e.g. "Temp"), problem was solved.

Sorry, j-b, under VLC 1.2.0-git-20100820-0002 Twoflower it does not work, too.
BTW - it has probably something to do with some system based service in Windows (XP and Vista). I experienced error in treating IFO files in DVDFAB program as well. When I moved target folder in a path without international characters, it worked fine.
In summary: IFO files cannot be played in VLC or created in DVDFAB (I know you have nothing to do with DVDFAB
), if they are located in folders named by special or non-ascii characters.

I'm having the same problem with VLC 1.1.5 on Windows 7: VIDEO_TS.IFO won't open if there are international characters in the path. Source of the video doesn't matter -- most my "DVD" videos are actually recordings from TV, converted from DVB broadcasts, but the problem is exactly the same with material taken from factory-made DVD. Only thing that matters is whether there are international charcaters in the path or not.
I tried this version too:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... -win32.exe
, but it was even worse. I couldn't get it to play DVD videos on any path.
I'd be glad if this could be got back to working in some near-future version of VLC. Like someone else had noticed too, these paths have worked with some earlier versions of the VLC (probably in 1.0.x they still worked).
