possible issues with decoding filmgrain and static

Postby mikeloeven » 16 Jun 2010 19:34

recently i downloaded a anime series that used alot of film grain effects as well as static and other intentional distortions of the video track generally used for dramatic effect.

the file's video was formatted avc1 rate 23.9 1920x1080

the entire video ran normally but every time a filmgrain effect was used the player began skipping frames and blocking. i downloaded the same anime from a different capture and subtitling group and the error occured in the same scenes but at different locations. i tried playing the same files multiple times and noticed that while it occured in generally the same scene on all videos there was no consistancy as to the exact timing of the event. i tried downloading a third version of the same anime in lower quality 720p and the problem was noticabley reduced but still there. i am not sure if this is a problem with all 3 video files or just the way vlc processes the filmgrain effects but it seems as though any time filmgrain effects and other forms of static are used in a video clip it seem to either cause vlc to utalize more resources to decode and display causing the system to jerk a bit or it or simply doesent display it properly from the start.

i have been playing 720 and 1080 vidoes for a while now and never had a problem before. but than again i cant remember any of the other videos using film grain effects.

Re: possible issues with processing filmgrain and static eff

i have encountered this problem again since last post since the filmgrain is not a seperate effect and part of the media file i think the issue may be related to the rapid switch of alternating pixels from black to white in a concentrated area. all i know is any time there i alot of static in a media file vlc uses way too many resources to decode that segment and results in stuttering
