[SOLVED] vlc-help.txt, etc. in English?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

[SOLVED] vlc-help.txt, etc. in English?

Postby OsakaWebbie » 16 Jun 2010 03:12

I think the installation script detects the language of my OS and decided that since I have Japanese Windows, surely I also want VLC in Japanese (not!). I read here somewhere that there is only one program file and it contains all the languages, but even though I select English when I install, not only does the program start in Japanese by default (I did figure out how to change that), but the vlc-help.txt file is in Japanese and I don't see an English version hiding anywhere. How can I get at least that file in English, and whatever else I might run into later that has this issue?

I figured out that vlc-help.txt is dynamic - it was filled with info after I typed "vlc --help" on the command line. So what I would like, if someone with a truly English installation would do me this favor, is to type "vlc --longhelp" (I think that's the one with the most info - if not, do whatever gives the most) and send me the result. As far as I can tell, there is no file attachment capability on this forum (even in the PM functionality), but if you PM me, I'll give you my email address.

Or, if the same information (explanation of command line options for all modules) is online somewhere, please point me to it. I can't find anything like that, but I might not be looking in the right place.

Never mind - I cracked the code. After having set the language in the program to English previously, I had installed a newer version, and after that, had not gone back into the GUI and set the language again before starting to work with the command line stuff and requesting the doc file contents. Just now I opened the GUI to check on something and discovered that it was still (or rather, again) Japanese. So I changed the language setting to English again, closed the GUI, and then requested the help file from the command line again - this time it gave it to me in English. Whew - much easier reading!
