Hi all,

I have a little problem and hope someone can help me.

My father just bought the Archos 420. With this you can record liveTV directly. So yesterday, he "taped" a show.
He has no problem to read the AVI from his PC with windows player 10. He sent me the file (I live in
Japan, he is in France). I am on a mac OSX 10.3 and use vlc 0.8.1.
I have never had a problem playing a file or DVD so far. But using VLC to play this file, I have the video, but no sound.
If I use quicktime, I have sound but no video ! I downloaded mplayer OSX and there I have the video and
the audio !! I looked at the characteristics of the file with the 2 players:

VLC
----
video codec: divx, 512x384
audio codec: ms, 4 bits/sample, 32kkz, 257Kbs

mplayerOSX
--------------
video codec : xvid, 1839.6kps, 512x384, 25fps
audio codec: imaadpcm, 129kps, 32Khz, stereo

quicktime
-----------
video codec : DIVX
compression: DVI IMA

So I am really confused here :!: What is the correct codec for video and
for audio ? What do i need to do to be able to use vlc to play this file ?
precision: I just installed VLC and mplayerOSX and never downloaded any codecs.
Tried to look on google for ms and vlc, but found nothing,

Thanks,
Lankou.

It look like VLC doesn't support this codec.
It's very likely that there's no free & open source decoder for this codec.

That's what I thought. Stipid question: How come mplayerOSX is able to play
it ? It is also a free player, did the mplayer OSX coding team
do some reverse engineering ?
Also I am curious : why depending on the player, it is xvid or divx.
The doc of the archos says the codec they implemented is xvid.

Thanks

I have got the same problem with the AVI files created with my ARCHOS AV700.
VLC doesn't play the audio. But it does play the video.
QT doesn't play the video (but we knew that). Instead it does play the audio.
I didn't try mplayerOSX (yet).
Iankou said "How come mplayerOSX is able to play it ?"
I would add: how come QT is able to play it too (the audio) ?
Iankou, I have got a question for you:
I have been able to find the characteristics of the file in VLC --> Window --> Info.
How do you get the same info with QT ?
Thanx
