Streaming audio history

Is it possible for VLC to create a log based on a streaming audio source?

Basically meaning, all the tag information (metadata) that gets passed through the stream, can that be captured? I don't want to rip the stream, just create a list of all the songs that a particular stream has played recently (artists and song titles). I thought winamp might be able to do it, but none of the plugins that I found were able to.
