DVDs very slow to load

All of a sudden I am experiencing very slow load times when opening DVDs. If I select Media->Open Disc, the VLC interface will go blank and freeze for about 30 seconds. All of the controls and menus then re-appear. At this point if I click the play button, there will be another pause of around 20-30s after wich the DVD will open and start playing properly. Its not just one DVD, its happening for all of my DVDs and never used to be this way.
The "check for updates" option says that I am running the latest version.
Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm running WinXP SP3.

Thanks but where can I download the 1.1.0-rc build from? I've just been searching for it without any success.

Here is a solution for a problem that may be the DVD disk is not of good quality so it will take more time than natural or may be something wrong with the DVD writer itself. So check that out it will surely help.

does that happen with other media players or just VLC?
