Is it possible to synch viewing of 2 remote VLC's

I have been searching for this capability, but have been unable to find it. Don't know if I'm just googling poorly, or if what I want to do hasn't been done yet. I believe it is relatively straightforward, so if it doesn't exist yet, would be willing to explore pulling things together . . . with some help from folks here.
I would like to be able to watch a movie (i.e. local video file) simultaneously with one or more other people remote from me. I'm NOT talking about streaming -- I want to be able to watch 720p mkv files, so streaming seems out of the question. So I'm imagining each viewer has the same mkv file locally.
I see two distinct scenarios.
1) One VLC is the master, and sends play/pause/etc. commands to the other vlc's via some interface (MPRIS, D-BUS, XMSS2, VLC's Remote Control Inteface . . .).
2) Any of the viewers could send play/pause/etc. commands to the other vlc's.
What I'm imagining being able to do is watch movies with friends across the country, while chatting on Skype.
Has anyone else out there ventured into this territory? Doesn't it seem particularly 'do-able'?
Thanks for any and all support on this,
And, please, pass the popcorn . . .
