Preferences won't "Save"

I have no idea whether this falls under the realm of windows or general troubleshooting. I'm guessing it's probably interface, and therefore "general" related. For the record, I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 32-bit SP3. VLC Player version 1.0.5 Goldeneye, Qt4 Interface. I can tell you who it was compiled by if that will make a difference. As it is in the form of an email address, I will PM it to you if you feel you need it. As a general rule I don't post that kind of information where it can be picked up by spam bots.
The way VLC Player is currently behaving(and has been this way since I updated to 1.0.5), preferences "Saved"(by pressing the "Save" button) when a file is playing or paused take no effect until the file is stopped and restarted, a different file is opened, or VLC Player is closed, and reopened. I finally figured this out quite by accident tonight. I would expect any changed settings to be applied when I push the "Save" button and exited the preferences menu. This could be localized to the Qt4 interface. I don't see my preferences menu in any of the screen shots in the available documentation.
Is there any way to force preferences to apply to a playback in progress?
Let me know if you need more information. Thanks for reading!
