Buffer local files to memory

Postby lostinlodos » 02 Apr 2010 09:44

Is there a way to easily buffer entire local files to memory, or set a buffer size to buffer local files to ram. In this day of 8-16Gig ram, it would make skipping around in files, especially MPEG and MKV files, much smoother. Currently files stutter when skipping forward in short hops of under 1 minute on MKVs and any jump in MPEG4 and MPEG Transport Streams.
I guess what I'm actually looking to do is set a local SIZE buffer equivlant to using a script mod in totem, as a
to: local memory buffer = 4096MB
to pre-buffer up to 4 gigs to ram. That's ALL of most SD files and a good quarter of an HD file.

No. And it's not that easy. VLC still has to run on much smaller scale systems. I run it with 256 Mb (for the whole system)...

Understood, was just hoping there was an easier way before I started looking at creating a hack. Does changing the buffer in the video options affect stationary files? I have it set to buffer 2 minutes (120 000) at this point, but if it can take the value, and it buffers ALL video, not just streams, I'll just set the value to 2 hours (7 200 000) and be done with it. May take longer to load but at least that way it's in the memory.
