How Do I Activate Lirc?

I have VLC installed on my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. Lirc is installed and I can test it and see that the keypresses on my remote are working. How do I activate Lirc within VLC?

It's not enabled in the Ubuntu package. You'd need to recompile or complain to the Ubuntu packagers.
