Lost cursor in fullscreen display

Hi all, a new member here - I hope someone can help. I have tried searching but not found any similar reports.
While playing a video in full screen I clicked (may have been a double click) on the cursor and fullscreen controller at the bottom of the screen, and it suddenly vanished. I was switching between varying the volume and dragging the playback position. I can't find any way of getting it back except F11 which brings it up permanently, along with a tool bar at the top. I had the same thing happen on my other PC, and ended up removing & reinstalling VLC. The options for its position and display time are still showing in the preferences menu. Right clicking brings up a smaller menu, with some controls, but there doesn't seem to be any way of re-instating the floating control bar. Closing and restarting VLC doesn't help, neither does rebooting the PC. I'm running v9.9 on both as I had some other problems with later versions.
Any ideas?
