converting video to audio

I want to convert some video files and save them as audio files, but, despite trying on the VLC programme, and searching the VLC site, I have been unsuccesful on both accounts. Can anyone assist or point me to the correct information page? Thank you

Are you using the GUI ?
If so, just untick the video stream in the selected conversion profile.

Sorry, I don't know what a GUI is. I have MP4 video files, but I want to save them as audio files. I'm not sure whether it's possible to do this at the moment.
