VLC1.0.5 locking up computer

I'm running 1.0.5 on 32-bit Windows XP.

Whenever I attempt to play a video file in VLC, it resizes its window to fit the video and then the playback area goes black. The audio track starts playing, but video does not. Even worse, it locks up my computer to the point where I need to hard-reboot just to get out of it. Sometimes a portion of the playback area will turn a green colour. I've tried multiple files, all AVIs and mp4s. Music files play just fine in VLC.

Not sure why this is happening. I recently updated my GPU (NVidia 9400m) driver to the most recent , but it was recalled, so I system restored back to a few days ago. Could it be that this broke the old driver somehow? Or would it be a problem with my video codecs?

I should also say that my GPU doesn't seem to be malfunctioning; it still works just fine in games, etc.

I have already tried resetting preference and cache files and reinstalling.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Any advice is appreciated.

I registered just to report what seems to me to be a similar problem. Cannot play .flv or .mov files from the desktop using vlc 1.0.5.x on FC11.
