1080 MKV Video files on HD TV

A Question. If I use VLC Media Player to play 1080p Files, Is it Considered HD?
If its HD,
If Im using my Standard 20 Inch Monitor, am I right to understand that the Quality wont be that much Obvious
Will the HD of my MKV 1080p Rips show up on my 40 Inch HD LCD TV with the so called HD Quality?
Or Is it just Standard Definition?
To Sum up, is there much difference to playing my Blue ray Discs direct through the PS3 on my HD LCD TV,
compared to Playing my 1080p Rips of the Movies played through VLC?
