Can't play VC1 (from BluRay rip)

Hi all,
I've ripped DISC1 of Life - BBC Earth (narrated by David Attenborough) using the last version of MakeMKV but VLC can't play the video track (neither on MacOS X 10.6.2 or Windows 7; both running VLC version 1.0.5 or one of the leatest nightly build).
While playing the file I can only hear the audio track, I can't see any video track and VLC continuously reports errors "avcodec warning: cannot decode one frame (XXXXXXX bytes)".

I've downloaded the last version of Media Player Classic for Windows and I can see the video track so I think it's something about VLC. Is there a way to let developer have a sample/part of this huge video (almost 14GB for the first title) to make a few tests?

Use DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

30-40 MB should be enough for a BD sample, 50 MB max.

I've uploaded a 47MB sample here.
Here a few infos about the original file:

Code: Select all

I've uploaded a 47MB sample here.
Please can you post it on Megaupload ?
Only few people have full access to the FTP and they are not always available.

Here a few infos about the original file:

Code: Select all

Codec (Human Name) -> VC-1 Codec (FourCC) -> WVC1 Scan Type -> Interlaced Scan Order -> TFF
If the video stream is really VC-1 interlaced then there is no player based on ffmpeg/libavcodec which can play these streams (yet). Only progressive VC-1 streams will play.
If MPC(-HC?) can play it then it's using the built-in codec of Windows. On Windows you may want to try the use of the DMO switch to force the use of the Windows DMO built-in codec:

Code: Select all

vlc.exe --codec dmo

I don't know if it's revealed as interlaced or if it's really an interlaced video track; all I can say is that the disc cover reports the main feature as "High Definition 1080p" (I'm talking about the 4 discs of "Life - BBC Earth"). The second - 5 discs - collection ("Planet Earth as you've never seen it before - BBC Earth") is reported to be "High Definition 1080i". Will try to rip one of the disc of the second collection asap... stay tuned :)

That would be nice indeed, and I'd wish to have a chunk of the original M2TS showing a part of the program and not the intro.

Because your sample is strange. The video is muxed as being 25 FPS but the stream itself is flagged as being 23.976 FPS.

Should I use TS_muxer to get this kind of sample?

EDIT: damn it... still not compatible with Snow Leopard :( You have to wait until I'll reboot in Windows (in the mean time I'll try to do everything with a virtual Machine in Paralles).

rip Blu-ray disc for Mac, you can try to use PavTube Blu-ray ripper, I have used it, worked fine for me, I prefer Pavtube one because of its fast conversion speed and its pretty good output video and audio whcih satisfy me.
it's shareware, but free trial, you can check it out, good luck!

I've ripped out the first 500MBs of the 3 main titles of the first disc (second collection) using POVtube: amazing tool! Seriously thinking about buying this software.
The 3 samples plays just fine on VLC 1.0.6-git.

Yeah, it is an amazing tool, version 2.5 is released,
added support to identify detailed information of audio streams, including languages, codecs, stream ids and channels. added subtitle support to Blu-ray disc ripping, which enables users to select subtitle for converted files, tracks and subtitles of different languages are available, this upgrade is very good! :D
