Subtitle line too long

When I load an srt file in VLC, the top line is about 120% of the video screen width, meaning the end bits don't show. I can't find any way of setting this. And I don't have the same problem on another PC with the same files.
How do I set line width? Either in terms of screen width % or no. of characters?
