video window problems

I've upgraded VLC on a fresh system to a newer version and for some odd reason I have problems with the video output. I'd like the video to be shown in an extra window, not integrated in the interface. When I use a skin, the only thing I get is either full screen output or a tiny window (almost thumbnail size) that says VLC Media Player, that can not be scaled.
Since I know that this is not a big thing and that it has worked for me for quite some time I'm a bit confused that I can't get it to work right now...
Thanks for your help.

That's an option in the preferences dialog (but looks like your skin sucks).

Actually, I have the problem with every skin. Some skins dont show a video output at all, with others it looks like this:
Under Preferences -> all > Video Enable video is checked, embedded video is not checked.

The video window you mention is part of this skins design. At least, there is nothing wrong in the way it works. It's just a matter of taste here.
The embedded/no-embedded-video parameter has not been taken into account in skins, and that's a pity. Should be implemented in next version at least for consistency throughout vlc. (another parameter --no-skinned-video is already available in the branch dev, that does basically the same thing)

But how come that it has worked for me before? Back then only the player controls were skinned, the video output was a regular window that said VLC (Direct3D output) - basically the same like in native mode.

I'm talking about the current vlc1.0.x version.
In vlc0.9.x, video window management with skins was very basic, and often ended up with a default system window.
But that was another era !

Ohh. I see. That explains a lot. So basically it comes to the point that for my purposes the old skins are rather useless. Thats quite sad.

Use 1.1!
