Hi there,

Did you get an answer to this? I was trying to play avi files and was having big problems with divx (on mac) - i have nbow found vlc - which works fine. however, like you i want to get these avis into another format so i can put them on dvd (assuming that's what you want to do?)

any clues?

Dave

It's been a while (on Windows I use an app that can handle a .mpg, does the transform itself).

Anyhow:
Transcode to mp2v video, s52 audio (though mp2a should also be fine), is I believe the right thing (go for 2 or 3 Mbps on the video, 192K on the audio).
Use encapsulation method mpeg ps, save the output file to whatever_name.vob.

Create a "holding pen" folder, something with nothing in it. Create a folder below this blank folder, VIDEO_TS. Put the resulting file (the .vob) in the VIDEO_TS folder.
What you want to create the image of is the higher level folder containing the VIDEO_TS subfolder.

The other possibility is that there may need to be another folder at the level of VIDEO_TS, called AUDIO_TS. It will contain othing.

No guarantees -- I'm pretty sure this is the right thing, but I've only done it once or twice (before switching to some other SW for DVD creation).

A standard video DVD just has a single directory called VIDEO_TS with everything in it. The video files are .vob and contain the audio stream. There can be multiple .vob files for the one video segment and multiple video segments in the same directory. There is also index files that most players like to see for each video segment with .ifo and .bup extensions. There are also .ifo and .bup files for the whole VIDEO_TS directory, even if there is only one video segment. For example, here is the contents of a VIDEO_TS directory for a 53 minute video segment transcoded from XviD with DivX to DVD:

VIDEO_TS.BUP 6KB
VIDEO_TS.IFO 6KB
VTS_01_0.BUP 38KB
VTS_01_0.IFO 38KB
VTS_01_1.VOB 1,048574KB
VTS_01_2.VOB 160,316KB

The .ifo files contain the chapter headings and links to each chapter in the .vob files. I have been unable to get VLC to produce the .ifo files, despite checking off the option to force indexing of the file. Is there another way to get VLC to produce an indexed MPEG-2 output for burning on a standard video DVD?
