Playing backwards

Hi. I'm new to VLC and I can't seem to find any way to get it to play backwards so I can back up to a point I'm looking for in the movie. I've searched extensively on this forum and elsewhere but I can't find an answer to how to do it, though it doesn't seem to be included in lists of how to do things - the behaviour I am used to is the mousewheel fast forward and backward in PowerDVD, and if this is possible I would love to use this with VLC, which I like very much.

The only topic I found here that refers to this subject

Playing Video Backwards
at
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=69050&p=229397&hil ... se#p229397

says that to play "a video using libvlc backwards" "is not possible and probably never will be because it is way too complicated." but I don't know if this applies to the ordinary application as well as to libvlc, which may be obvious, but I don't know what libvlc is!

Playing backward is not supported, and probably never will be. This is excessively complicated, both in terns of development work and computer power.

Quicktime has been able to play back video and audio in reverse for over 10 years.

I'm sure Quicktime supports all the codecs and containers that VLC does. Not.
