No audio from USB device

Running VLC 1.0.3 and with a CCTV composite input to a Pinnacle 150e USB device. The detected audio device in Windows 7 (and Vista) is PCTV EMP audio device. In VLC Capture mode - Device selection this device is shown but will not configure and there is no audio output. The detected video codec and video output is OK. The original audio codec (PCTV 2821 audio) is not compatible at all with Vista / Windows7.
It works in windows XP but not in Vista or Windows 7. Has anybody had this problem and fixed it? I think its probably a Windows problem rather that VLC, any ideas?
