Video stutters when playing over network

Hello I got a problem with stuttering (is that the right term? I mean that the video freeze, get blockish and skip frames, etc) when I'm playing 720p (and 1080p via gigabit wired network) x264 mkv media from a smb share on the network.

If it matters the server got gigabit network card, I got a gigabit network and got a Wireless N card in my MacBook Pro so the bandwidth should be more then enough. So I was thinking is it possible for vlc to buffer and cache the files I'm playing kinda like youtube? I tried to raise the File caching to 1000, 10000 and 30000MS but it cause the whole video to freeze after about 2 minutes and then start again without audio. Copying the file over the network to the local computer only takes a few minutes even if the video is and hour long so if VLC could buffer and store/cache the file locally while playing I shouldn't get any problems with stuttering.

Increase caching.

Increase caching.
If you'd read my entire post you would see that I tried increasing caching and it caused the movie to freeze after about 2 minutes.

I'm using v 1.0.2 for Mac OS X atm. What's "1.1-git"?
