VLC does not support the audio or video format "vo3+"

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC does not support the audio or video format "vo3+"

Postby user2009 » 11 Dec 2009 14:26

I've downloaded some movies in avi and wmv extension and I'm having some difficulties.

First problem is about an avi, I get this error when opening with VLC:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "vo3+". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
I can see the movie, but there's no audio.

In another hand, WMP says: "The H264 codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the web, click Web Help." I'll not bother about that, don't like WMP anyway.

The second problem, I open the wmv in VLC and I don't receive any warning. Again, I can see the movie, but there's no audio.

Opening in WMP, everything is normal, video and audio are ok.
I clicked on "file"> "properties" and it shows:
audio codec: Windows Media Audio 10 Professional
128 kbps, 44 kHz, 2 channel 16 bit (A/V) 1-pass CBR

Video codec: Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile

Is there anything I can do to fix these problems in VLC M.P.? Workaround etc?

Someone said on this topic viewtopic.php?t=20975&
that "Known issue, but the bug entry indicates that "vo3+" was just a placeholder so we could recognize these files if we ever got samples. So... do we have any samples?"

How do I send a sample? I use Windows.

VO3+ is OGG Vorbis 3 Plus.
VLC doesn't support Vorbis in AVI like many other players.

You need to remux the file to OGM, for instance with AviDemux using the Copy Stream feature so there will be no reencoding.
And VLC will be able to play this OGM file with sound.

Tools -> Preferences (All) -> Input/Codecs -> Other Codecs -> Tick the box for Prefer system plugins over VLC
Save, exit VLC and now try again to play your video.

Thanks. I'm downloading Avidemux.

Thanks. I'm downloading Avidemux.
You can get the SVN builds. They are more up to date and several bugs have been fixed since the release.

It didn't work. :(
Oh yep I forgot to tell you that there is sometimes a little bug when using the DMO audio decoder (aka system plugins): in the audio menu you may need to disable the audio and then to reenable it back.
If it still doesn't work then tell us what is your OS and which version of WMP is installed, and also post a full messages log with verbosity set to 2.

Dredging up this dead thread to add a solution I found working on windows 7 as those listed here didn't quite work.

I opened the unplayable avi file with avidemux and saved the audio file (drop down "audio" and select save audio). This file could be played with Media Player Classic but would not play on it's own within any other player. I could however, now view the video in SMPlayer by loading the broken video and loading the extracted audio file as a separate audio stream.

HOWEVER, when I went to re-add the audio through avidemux I was told that it could not be used as an audio track. The audio itself still seemed broken and wouldn't load in half of my players, converters and was completely bugged if I opened it in Audacity in an attempt to re-save it. I was considering playing the extracted, but still broken, mp3 in Media Player Classic and just recording with audacity but that would take ages.

I finally found a converter called FRE:AC which was able to create an unbroken mp3 with the broken file.

The NEW mp3 file could be added to the video via avidemux and saved as a new video file that plays properly.

I know this is an old thread but given that I couldn't find a complete answer to this anywhere I'm going to add mine so anyone else looking in future can benefit.

vo3+ should be supported in the 3.0.0 NB.

Can you share the file?
