Play Hotkey Without Reverting to Normal Speed

When you use the play button on the vlc window, play resumes at whatever speed you were previously using, but when you use the play hotkey, it always reverts to normal speed regardless of the previous speed setting. Is there any way to make the hotkey function the same as the play button?

Use the play/pause shortcut instead of play only.
