VLC stops when playing image-by-image

Hi,
I'm using the VLC version 1.0.1 Goldeneye and experiencing the following issue:
When playing an AVI video using the 'image-by-image' button, the player hang-up after displaying a sequence of 10, sometimes 15/20 images.
The player is then 'Paused', according to the taskbar icon - but hitting the Play button does not re-activate the player.
Please advise - thanks!
