How can I see what codec is currently used by VLC?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How can I see what codec is currently used by VLC?

When I open Codec information window it does not say much. Is there any way to get more info?

VLC 1.1 will tell more, else, you cannot.
